Recreational Playfield Improvement Project - Valley Road-Grimes

Valley Road Design

Outdoor playfield space at WSU receives high demand for both organzied and informal recreational activities.  Valley Road Playfield alone is the second most utilized recreation facility on the Pullman campus at Washington State University.  The field hosts well over 25,000 scheduled users and numerous informal recreational users annually despite being closed for over five months of the year due to poor field conditions and maintenance.  Additional fields including Grimes Way, South Fairway, Rogers-Orton, Martin Stadium, and Rogers Practice field provide valuable space for competitive sport clubs, intramurals, open play, and the Cougar Marching Band.

A process started in the Spring 2005, the Recreational Playfield Improvement project has been in development for four years.  The goal of the development process was to provide a safe, available location to allow students to acces playfield space for a wide variety of activities year round.

Grimes DesignThe Recreational Playfield Improvement project would provide major upgrades to both Valley Road and Grimes playfields.  The project would provide for an artificial surface similar to that in Martin Stadium and Bailey-Brayton Field.  This surface would allow for safe year round play regardless of weather conditions.  Additionally, new fencing, reconfiguration of lighting and leveling of the playing surface on Valley Road will provide premiere conditions for everything from intramural sports, to competitive sport club play, to open recreational opportunities.

Playfield space continues to be a highly demanded and utilized for Washington State University.  University Recreation hopes that addressing the current facility deficiencies will allow for the development of a world-class amenity that will serve the campus for years to come.  Student invovlement and support is critical to ensure that students receive the best facility to meet their needs.
